Discovering lice in your child's hair can feel overwhelming — but don't panic. With the right tools and a clear plan, you can get rid of lice quickly and effectively. Here's everything you need to know.
Step 1: Confirm It's Lice
Before treating, make sure you're actually dealing with lice. Look for tiny, sesame-seed-sized insects moving through the hair, or small white or yellowish eggs (nits) attached to hair shafts close to the scalp. Nits are often mistaken for dandruff, but unlike dandruff, they don't brush off easily.
Step 2: Treat the Hair Immediately
Start treatment as soon as possible. Apply a lice treatment spray — like our Lice Terminator Spray — directly to dry hair, saturating from root to tip. Leave it on for the recommended time, then rinse thoroughly. The Lice Terminator Spray is formulated to kill lice on contact without harsh chemicals, making it safe for the whole family.
Step 3: Comb Out the Nits
Killing live lice is only half the battle — you also need to remove the nits to prevent re-infestation. Use a fine-tooth lice comb, like our Lice Terminator Comb, to carefully comb through small sections of damp hair from root to tip. Wipe the comb on a paper towel after each pass. This step takes patience but is essential.
Step 4: Wash Everything
Lice can survive off the head for up to 48 hours. Wash all bedding, clothing, hats, and towels that the affected person has used in the past two days in hot water (at least 130°F / 54°C) and dry on high heat. Items that can't be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks.
Step 5: Check Everyone in the Household
Lice spread easily through close contact. Check every member of the household and treat anyone who shows signs of infestation. Notify your child's school or daycare so other families can check too.
Step 6: Repeat Treatment if Needed
Some lice eggs may survive the first treatment. Repeat the spray and comb-out process 7–10 days after the first treatment to catch any newly hatched lice before they can lay more eggs.
