Head lice can be difficult to spot, especially when there are only a few. Knowing where to look and what you're looking for can make checking your child's hair much easier.
The CDC says the best way to diagnose head lice is to find a live crawling louse or nymph. Nits can also be seen attached to individual strands of hair.
Step 1: Find Good Lighting
Have your child sit somewhere with bright lighting. Natural daylight can be especially helpful.
Separate the hair into small sections so you can clearly see the scalp and individual hair strands.
Step 2: Know Where to Look
Pay special attention to:
- Behind both ears
- The nape/back of the neck
- Close to the scalp
- Then work through the rest of the head section by section.
These are common areas to find lice and nits.
Step 3: Use a Fine-Toothed Lice Comb
A fine-toothed lice or nit comb can make checking much easier.
Work through small sections of hair and examine the comb after each pass. Live lice can be difficult to see because they're small and move quickly.
Step 4: Know the Difference Between Nits and Dandruff
This is where many parents get confused.
Dandruff and debris usually move or come away from the hair easily. Nits are firmly attached to the hair shaft.
Nits found close to the scalp—particularly within about ¼ inch—are more concerning for an active infestation.
Step 5: Don't Panic
Head lice can happen to any family. Having lice has nothing to do with whether someone's hair or home is clean.
