Finding head lice can make parents feel like they suddenly need to wash every blanket, vacuum every room, bag up stuffed animals, and deep-clean the entire house.
The good news? You don’t need to turn your home upside down.
Head lice are primarily spread through direct head-to-head contact. They live and feed on the human scalp and don't survive well for long once separated from a person. The CDC says spending excessive time or money on housecleaning activities is not necessary for controlling head lice.
Focus on the Hair, Not the House
When head lice are found, your time and attention are better spent checking the hair carefully and following your chosen treatment and combing instructions.

A few practical precautions are reasonable. The CDC recommends machine-washing and drying clothing, bed linens, and other items used by the affected person during the two days before treatment, soaking combs and brushes in hot water, and vacuuming areas where the person sat or lay. Items that can't be washed can be sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks.
You do not need to deep-clean your entire home.
You also don't need to spend your day scrubbing walls, shampooing every carpet, or treating every room with pesticides.
Put Your Energy Where It Matters
Check family members for lice, carefully follow treatment directions, and use a fine-toothed metal nit comb as directed.
Most importantly, don't panic. Lice happens—and having head lice isn't a sign that your child or your home is dirty.
